"If you need the answer in kilometers, buy a calculator!"
J Robert Franks, Physician Associate, USA
"Shouldn't it be from the time of the Flash to the sound of the Thunder. Remember light is much faster than sound."
Iain
"This has to be backwards. Doesn't it? "

"The instructions are in reverse order. As the visual aspect of the lightning/thunder phenomenon is much faster that the sound aspect you start timing from the point at which you see the lightning. The number of seconds from lightning to hearing the thunder divided by five will yield an approximate distance in miles."
Lawrence Licata, Sr. Support Analyst
"This is accurate to within 5% (assuming the lightning comes first)."
Craig, University professor
"Note to self: DO NOT let Physician Associates do "Distance to Lightning" rules..."
John A. Van Doren, Life long learning and helping, USA
"Based on the speed of sound being 600 mph, you should divide by 6 Sound travels at 1 mile every 6 seconds"
